Alternative Indicators Summer School

Abstract
: This course introduces methods to gather data from the web to create alternative
research impact indicators, sometimes known as altmetrics. These indicators may help to
evaluate the early scholarly impacts of academic research as well as its wider impacts. The
course will discuss indicator formula including the Mean Normalised Citation Score and Mean
Normalised Log Citation Score that enable fair comparisons between articles published in
different fields and years. The course will use the software Webometric Analyst to gather the
data and create the web indicators. Data sources to be covered include Altmetric.com scores,
Mendeley reader counts and a range of web indicators
