Dance, books, YouTube and Twitter Data mining culture from the social
web

Abstract:
This talk will describe a method to extract information about recreational activities
from the comments posted to social web sites, including YouTube, Twitter and Goodreads.
The method uses the free Windows software Mozdeh to compare the words used in posts by
different groups of users, different topics, or at different points in time. The talk will be
illustrated with analyses of gender differences in book reading preferences within the social
book reading site Goodreads and gender differences in dance preferences based on YouTube
comments on videos relating to different dance styles.
